Entre la legalidad y la calle: el comercio informal vs el comercio formal en Av. Pedro Montt de la ciudad de Valparaíso

Abstract

Esta investigación se centra en el impacto del comercio informal en la competitividad de los comercios formales en la Avenida Pedro Montt de la ciudad de Valparaíso, un lugar que ha sido testigo de importantes cambios económicos y sociales considerando en términos cronológicos principalmente el año 2020 al año 2023. Con el aumento del comercio informal, especialmente tras la crisis provocada por la pandemia, surge la necesidad de entender cómo estas dinámicas afectan a los negocios establecidos en la zona. Para ello se hace un estudio de investigación mixta con la finalidad de obtener información relevante sobre los principales sujetos de este fenómeno, quienes son locales formales e individuos del comercio informal de la ciudad de Valparaíso, específicamente en la zona de Avenida Pedro Montt. Para profundizar aún más en la metodología mixta, respecto a los datos cuantitativos, se planteó la necesidad de obtener información específica sobre el comercio, ventas y el empleo en la ciudad de Valparaíso. La mayoría de los datos cuantitativos, cifras y estadísticas presentadas en este informe provienen de estudios, documentos y páginas web de instituciones reconocidas, tales como la Cámara de Comercio de Valparaíso, el Instituto Nacional de Estadísticas (INE), Banco central y otras fuentes confiables. Por otro lado, se realizaron entrevistas con comerciantes informales situados en la Avenida Pedro Montt, lo que permitió obtener una visión más completa de la situación y percepción de la competitividad. El comercio informal ha crecido al 13,89% en la ciudad de Valparaíso, pero no compite directamente con el comercio formal, ya que ambos operan en nichos diferenciados. Los comercios formales, aunque enfrentan desafíos, siguen adaptándose y no han sido desplazados. La hipótesis de que el comercio informal ha disminuido la competitividad del comercio formal se refuta, ya que ambos sectores se relacionan parcialmente. This research focuses on the impact of informal trade on the competitiveness of formal businesses in Avenida Pedro Montt in the city of Valparaíso, a place that has witnessed important economic and social changes considering in chronological terms mainly the year 2020 to the year 2023. With the increase in informal commerce, especially after the crisis caused by the pandemic, the need arises to understand how these dynamics affect the businesses established in the area. To this end, a mixed research study is carried out in order to obtain relevant information on the main subjects of this phenomenon, who are formal premises and individuals in informal trade in the city of Valparaíso, specifically in the area of Avenida Pedro Montt. To further deepen the mixed methodology, with respect to quantitative data, the need to obtain specific information on trade, sales, and employment in the city of Valparaíso was raised. Most of the quantitative data, figures and statistics presented in this report come from studies, documents, and websites of recognized institutions, such as the Chamber of Commerce of Valparaíso, the National Institute of Statistics (INE), the Central Bank and other reliable sources. On the other hand, interviews were conducted with informal traders located on Avenida Pedro Montt, which allowed for a more complete picture of the situation and perception of competitiveness. Informal commerce has grown to 13.89% in the city of Valparaíso, but it does not compete directly with formal commerce, as both operate in distinct niches. Formal businesses, although facing challenges, continue to adapt and have not been displaced. The hypothesis that informal trade has diminished the competitiveness of formal trade is refuted, as the two sectors are partially related.
