Thesis AMÉRICA LATINA SE DESACELERA A DOS VELOCIDADES.(2018) Gutiérrez Correa, Cesar Antonio; Departamento de Ingeniería Comercial; Fuenzalida O'Shee, Darcy ElizardoThe authorities in emerging economies are facing a complex moment of slowing growth, difficult external conditions and high vulnerabilities after about a decade of sustained growth. This situation has been reflected by the fall of large regional economies which have been strongly affected by the continued fall in the price of crude oil since 2014, which has produced a significant reduction in export sales and tax revenues of oil-producing countries such as Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico and Venezuela. Also with the fall in the commodities prices has been significantly affected exporting countries such as Chile, Brazil, Dominican Republic and Peru. This slowdown has had its origin in different political, social and economic factors related with; (i) an increase of social unrest as a result of the limitations of the "welfare state " in the countries of the region, which has been accompanied by a strengthening of the "public awareness"; (ii) an increase in distrust due to increased political uncertainty and specifically of economic policies; (iii) an increase in the levels of political corruption; (iv) a less favorable external environment strongly influenced by the falling prices of commodities and declining demand among regional partners. The recession led by Brazil has influenced the perception of growth of the region considering that most countries are still growing moderately but surely and that the contraction responds to events that are taking place in a few countries. For Latin America and the Caribbean, it is expected to grow at two speeds in the region with moderate growth for 2016-17 in the countries of the Pacific Alliance (Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru) while Brazil will suffer a strong recession that will drag the Mercosur countries.
