Abstract
This thesis develops the reliability improvement of the diesel fuel purification and filtration system across the SAAM Towage fleet, composed of 203 tugboats operating in 12 countries throughout the Americas. The work originates from six catastrophic events documented during the 2024–2025 period in main and auxiliary engines, attributable to the ingress of fuel contaminated with water, solid sediments and microbial contamination, with associated losses quantified at 2,102,000 USD per year. The work applies the Six Sigma DMAIC methodology, covering its five phases over a problem with a mixed technical and management scope. The Define and Measure phases formalized the problem and built the quantitative baseline; the Analyze phase validated five root causes through the convergence of independent tools; the Improve phase designed and implemented the interventions on a pilot unit; and the Control phase consolidated the results into a permanent control standard. The diagnosis revealed that the fleet operated without a common technical reference, with up to 41 different maintenance task configurations for the same purifier model and no unit having verified its configuration. In response, operation, configuration and maintenance standards were built for the four dominant purifier models, the required primary filter standard was defined per engine model, and the pilot was implemented on the tugboat Tarqui, incorporating a hydrocyclonic prefilter and a sampling protocol that characterizes the contribution of each treatment stage. The work concludes with (...).
