Abstract
Historically, healthcare has focused primarily on treating disease. However, this perspective has gradually evolved toward a comprehensive approach to health, incorporating social, physical, psychological, and emotional dimensions. In Chile, the Comprehensive Healthcare Model (Modelo de Atención Integral de Salud, MAIS) has been progressively implemented alongside various humanization strategies, seeking to place individuals and their well-being at the center of healthcare while considering their broader life context. As a surgical referral hospital within the Valparaíso–San Antonio Health Service (SSVSA), Dr. Eduardo Pereira Hospital faces a high demand for healthcare services. Its infrastructure, originally built as a sanatorium, has had to adapt to its current hospital program, resulting in spatial limitations that hinder the incorporation of humanization strategies. In response to this situation, a Complementary Therapeutic Spaces Center is proposed to support the hospital’s functions and enhance patients’ well-being. The project also seeks to integrate the natural landscape as an active component of the therapeutic process through healing gardens and therapeutic pathways connected to nature. Particularly relevant is the seasonal garden located on the center’s roof, visible from the hospital’s inpatient rooms. Its changing colors and textures allow patients to maintain a reference to the passage of time and the natural cycles of the environment.
