Abstract
The present document develops the graduation modality called “Práctica Proyectual”, which consists of completing eight months of work in an architecture office, in this case ARQIAR, located in Viña del Mar. Several assignments were carried out, most of them related to the development of architectural drawings, models, reports, technical details and support with materials for citizen participation processes. From all the work carried out, the relevance that citizen participation acquires in public projects is recognised, and it is for this reason that the interest arose in studying in greater depth how these instances are developed, what the role of the architect is and how a project is communicated according to the different stages of design. Topic I presents citizen participation as a part of the development of public architecture projects in Chile. Everything involving the regulatory framework is reviewed, the participatory instances specifically linked to the design stage, the factors that may influence the community’s understanding of the project, and, additionally, certain case studies of participatory processes are analysed where the different ways of communicating a proposal are observed, together with their relationship with the stage and the development of the project. Topic II examines how a project is communicated and understood when presented to non-specialist audiences. Communication theory is analysed by considering the relationship among the sender, the message, and the receiver. Architectural representation resources are then analysed, identifying the different levels of interpretative effort. Finally, the influence of multisensory perception on the reception of information is studied, together with the concept of space and architectural atmosphere as dimensions inherent to architecture, which make it possible to broaden understanding of the project beyond the visual aspect. Topic III presents a communicational support proposal for citizen participation, designed as a flexible tool grounded in a sensory approach. The proposal guides the selection and prioritisation of stimuli associated with the existing place and its possible transformation, making it possible to prepare the communities’ receptiveness before the visual representation of the project, reduce the comprehension gap and open up a more situated reading of the architectural experience.
