Abstract
The degree project Water Learning Center “Oasis Chincolco” is developed in response to the water crisis affecting the locality of Chincolco, in the municipality of Petorca, an area characterized by a temperate semi-arid climate, a prolonged decrease in rainfall, and reduced water flows. These conditions have affected water supply, agricultural and livestock activities, population permanence, and the continuity of traditional rural practices. The proposal consists of an educational, productive, and community center aimed at promoting knowledge related to water collection, circulation, storage, and efficient use. Located on a site of approximately 3.27 hectares in central Chincolco, adjacent to the La Viña canal, the project connects architecture with the existing water infrastructure and the main educational and community facilities of the locality. The architectural concept is organized around the path of water, which is collected from the canal, conveyed through the natural slope of the terrain, temporarily stored in a cistern, and later used for irrigation of aromatic and medicinal plants, as well as hydroponic crops. This process is integrated into the users’ experience through educational stations, laboratories, workshop rooms, exhibition areas, and gathering spaces. The proposal also incorporates transitional spaces and materials associated with the local context, seeking to establish a relationship between architecture, landscape, and local water heritage. The project is primarily aimed at children and young people, while also encouraging the participation of local residents, farmers, community organizations, and visitors. In this way, “Oasis Chincolco” is conceived as a demonstrative infrastructure that combines environmental education, agricultural experimentation, and community interaction, contributing to territorial resilience and to the recognition of water as a vital, productive, cultural, and symbolic resource.
