Abstract

Commercial aviation is an activity done by airlines, whether these are big or small, devote to the air transport of people, goods or offering air taxi services. The concept of Low Cost Carrier (LCC) was born in The United States and after the process of deregulation in the aviation it was spread through Europe in the early 90s, for then get into the rest of the world. The commercial aviation industry has had a big boom in the last years, where the LCC airlines has been in charge of pointing to new segments of the market bringing closer passengers that used to use other ways of transport, who did not use air transport because the unaffordable fares, which leads to that many people use it today for first time. The proliferation of the Low Cost operative model has caused more than an alteration in the traditional airlines of the world. Companies like Ryanair in Europe, Southwest in The United States and GOL in Brazil, have overcrowded the using of air transport creating new segments of market or bringing closer to markets non worked before by traditional airlines, inciting those who could not pay the high fares of traditional airlines to use this way of transport. But in the history of this model it has existed those which have survived to the crisis and others which have disappeared in the attempt of getting profitability. In Chile by the moment there is not an airline established under this model which attend to the Chilean domestic market, since this is attempt by 3 airlines that serve regularly the domestic routes of passengers transport and cargo transport: Lan Airlines, Sky Airlines and Air Comet Chile, being all traditional airlines. The closer thing is the LASER project developed by Lan, which offers low fares in exchange of eliminating some services on board, this has had an answer by the passengers, since in the following graph it can be seen an increase of 22% from the year 2006 to 2007. An airline has factors that help to generate significant saving if they are correctly administrated. These are the use of Revenue Management, management in the dynamic fleet, punctuality and confidence among others. The LCC also present factors which help them to keep low fares in comparison with the market, and the relevant factors that were found in the research. According to the information obtained in the projection of demand for the Chilean domestic market, this will reach a growing near to 40%, projection that can be affected by the entry of a LCC, since this encourage the demand. The analysis of demand in the national routes shows that exist many which are having a growing over 20% from 2006 to 2007, this also can be due to Lan is offering these routes with accessible fares to the passenger, for example, to Calama the price of the return tickets is $49,000 Chilean pesos and in Turb bus the price of the outward is $29,000 in semi-bed service and $39,000 in Bed salon service. The survey yielded the passenger that uses the land way of transport for long distances do not prepare his trips with anticipation, because of this a low cost airline should strongly promote the in advance buying for ensuring the demand of flying or taking pertinent actions. On the other hand there is over a 90% of passengers which would be willing to change their trip decision and choose to travel by plane if an airline offers accessible fares, as the previous example, in exchange of the offered service just be a transport between an A point to a B point safety and punctual, since they are not interested in other services in exchange of receive a lower fares. The following research suggests the following for an airline with LCC model in Chilean domestic market: 1) promote the demand pointing to a new segment which is the passengers of land ways of transport. 2) Using electronic systems of distribution, a unified fleet with a high using, fast turnaround, team work and punctuality for reducing costs to the company and achieve a good position in the mind of the client. 3) A great percentage of the segment has never traveled by plane, showing some rejection to change the transport because lack of knowledge, because of this it must be done a program of comprehension of the electronic systems, which reduce costs to airlines and reduce time to passengers. According to Chilean laws it can be establish any airline while it fulfill with the technical requirements. Also the Chilean domestic market is highly gathered, but this does not prevent that it can be a high competition and also the entry of an LCC airline would bring benefits to the users because this entry could mean lower fares for having more competitive prices.
