Abstract
This research explores the factors that influence students in Chile when choosing a university degree, with emphasis on the persistence of the gender gap in specific fields of knowledge. Although female enrollment in higher education has increased, there remains a high concentration of women in traditionally feminized disciplines such as education, health, and social sciences, while men continue to dominate STEM fields, which are associated with higher income levels. The study employs a mixed-methods approach and will gather perceptions from both university and high school students regarding their vocational decision-making processes. The research will focus on private universities, specifically the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Universidad de Los Andes, Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez, Universidad del Desarrollo, Universidad Santo Tomás, and Universidad de Las Américas. Based on previous admission process results, trends will be analyzed to assess whether initiatives aimed at increasing female participation in underrepresented areas have had tangible effects. Within this context, institutional policies such as scholarships, mentoring programs, and the visibility of female role models will be examined. The study seeks to determine whether these practices effectively promote gender equity or merely serve as symbolic strategies with limited structural impact.
