Abstract
This study seeks to respond to the postulation that the work environment impacts positively on the performance of companies. In order to do this the approach presented by the Great Place to Work (GPTW) institute was used, an approach that supports the following hypothesis: As a company, to be part of the GPTW ranking expresses a good working environment, which positively affects the financial performance of the organization thus increasing the profitability of the firm. To achieve this, the study comparatively analyzes the companies belonging to the “Industria Bancaria Chilena” (Chilean Banking Industry) through financial analysis. The study focuses on this industry as it was already determined to be representative both on a country scale and within companies evaluated by GPTW, besides being one of the industries that gains more weight in the ranking on a national scale. Another argument which favored its selection for the analysis was that because of the “Ley General de Bancos” (General Banking Law) is possible to have all the information published by the “Superintendencia de Bancos e Instituciones Financieras” (Superintendency of Banks and Financial Institutions), so that the selection and analysis of data was obtained from a reliable source. To analyze the hypothesis, profitability indicators that measure the capacity of the financial institution in several aspects such as expansion, competitive position, among others are used. While there are various indicators to measure the profitability of a firm, in this study the return on equity (ROE) is selected because due to the components used in its calculation, it is possible to say that in this indicator the work and effort of the employees of the company converges. It is also exposed by a descriptive analysis, the approach of the best companies to work globally and locally, as well as the background of the companies in the analyzed industry. Finally, after the analysis, we reach the following conclusion: the hypothesis is in part contradicted because it claims that being part and to be published in the ranking of GPTW is an incident factor in the return on equity (ROE) of the company, but this impact is actually negative, it does not increase profitability. So, in that sense, the hypothesis is refuted.
