Abstract
Chile is now in a context of liberalization and globalization, where the stock market is becoming increasingly important. Since the country increases its share worldwide and has strong political-economic foundations that support the nation, Chile becomes an increasingly attractive option for inverstors. Therefore, it is appropriate to count with supporting models to properly assess the financial scenario. In this context, the study is focused on finding sufficient evidence about the existence of an efficient stock market in Chile, setting relationships between macroeconomic variables (which reflect the country’s situation) and the Chilean market returns. As a working strategy, both sector and heritage portfolios are set, using the share prices of the companies which form the groups in the 200-2009 period. The relationships were modelled using the beta coefficients which represent the portfolios’ sensibility to the macroeconomic variables. To structure them, it is set the risk factor “surprise to the factor” (the difference between the real and the forecasted value), to place the impact that represent that difference in the assets returns and in the portfolios themselves. The analysis is carried out using the Arbitrage Pricing Theory (APT). The results probe the existence of efficiency in the Chilean stock market. At the same time, the APT model results consistent in its implementation due to the weighting presence of the macroeconomic factors Monthly index of Economic Activity (IMACEC), Consumer Price Index (IPC), Monetary Policy Rate (TPM), Currency Rate (TC (US$ to CLP)) and Share Price Index (IPSA) in the portfolio returns. Also, the sensibilities present a certain weight in each of the portfolio, which reflects the influence of these macroeconomic factors in the returns of diverse Chilean sectors. Verifying the existence of efficiency in the Chilean Stock market, the empirical evidence of this final project also provides a solid foundation to future financial research which aims to structure predictive models of the Chilean economy.
