dc.description.abstract The Marga Marga open-air market is the only permanent infrastructure that has managed to settle on the bed of the Marga Marga estuary, right in the center of Viña del Mar, and the only activity that reliably takes place every week of the year. It operates two days out of seven, and for the rest of the week its support stands empty, like an exposed storeroom on the only surface shared by the two neighborhoods the estuary divides. The project starts from this underuse and reads it as an urban potential that has yet to be tapped. The reading of the site, from the region down to the open-air market, is condensed into three conditions. The first is flooding, which in winters of heavy rain covers the bed and sweeps away whatever it finds. The second is the interest in occupation that the estuary already shows. The third, born from the other two, is flexibility between activities. From there, the project takes flexible architecture as its design framework and adds a second programmatic line to the open-air market, that of festivals, massive and intermittent events the city already celebrates and that can take turns with the open-air market on the same ground. From this double demand, surviving the flood and leaving the bed free between one activity and the next, comes the design decision, which is disappearance. The module that hosts the activity rises from the ground and remains suspended, so that both water and events pass underneath. The proposal is a system of load-bearing walkways that crosses the estuary between the Mercado and Los Castaños bridges and carries the urban ground of both banks out to the channel, above flood level. Only the nodes rest on the bed, and they let the water through. The walkways support 252 modular units of 3.5 × 5 m, above the minimum of 243 stalls the open-air market requires. The units are grouped into 106 double and triple sets that are hoisted with pulleys and counterweights and fold themselves away as they rise. The circuit shelters four activity courtyards (...).en
