Mercado urbano ex-matadero. 6 oriente, Viña del Mar, Chile

Abstract

A fines del siglo XIX, Viña del Mar se destacó como una zona industrial influyente que, impulsada por la llegada del ferrocarril, se expandió hacia el norte, consolidando las calles 5 y 6 Oriente como un sector industrialmente significativo en la periferia del plano urbano. Este crecimiento propició la instauración del primer matadero público en la ciudad en 6 Oriente. Aunque gran parte de la infraestructura industrial de la ciudad fue destruida con el tiempo, el antiguo matadero persiste. Al evaluarlo desde una perspectiva personal, con antecedentes del caso y un análisis del contexto, se evidencia un deterioro tanto en la infraestructura como en el entorno inmediato, afectándose mutuamente. En consecuencia, se lleva a cabo una investigación histórica con el objetivo de otorgar un valor patrimonial al recinto que complementariamente a un análisis a diversas escalas, se busca identificar las deficiencias y oportunidades que surgen de la ubicación e infraestructura. Con base en este estudio, se pretende reinterpretar el programa y la estrategia arquitectónica original, respetando la morfología de la estructura. El objetivo es transformar el lugar en un espacio público que se integre y revitalice su entorno inmediato, con el propósito de concebir un espacio funcional, seguro e innovador.

At the end of the 19th century, Viña del Mar stood out as an influential industrial zone that, boosted by the arrival of the railroad, expanded northward, consolidating 5 and 6 Oriente Streets as an industrially significant sector on the periphery of the urban plan. This growth led to the establishment of the first public slaughterhouse in the city on 6 Oriente. Although much of the city’s industrial infrastructure was destroyed over time, the old slaughterhouse persists. When evaluating it from a personal perspective, with a background of the case and an analysis of the context, a deterioration in both the infrastructure and the immediate environment is evident, affecting each other. Consequently, a historical research is carried out with the objective of giving a heritage value to the enclosure that, in addition to an analysis at different scales, seeks to identify the deficiencies and opportunities that arise from the location and infrastructure. Based on this study, we intend to reinterpret the program and the original architectural strategy, respecting the morphology of the structure. The objective is to transform the site into a public space that integrates and revitalizes its immediate surroundings, with the purpose of conceiving a functional, safe and innovative space.
