Abstract
This thesis aims to technically and economically evaluate the impact of incorporating a fines preclassification stage, using a Grizzly Feeder, prior to the primary crusher feed in a comminution circuit. In mining operations, the ingress of natural fine material (ROM) into crushing chambers causes the packing phenomenon, which increases component wear, reduces energy efficiency, and acts as a bottleneck that limits the plant’s overall throughput. The study methodology was based on phenomenological modeling and steady‑state simulation of the circuit using JKSimMet 6.1, parameterized with operational and industrial data provided by the company Valteck, together with specialized literature. Sequential comparative scenarios were evaluated to quantify the operational relief, balance the electromechanical loads of the equipment, and subject the circuit to a stress test to determine its maximum safe capacity. Simulation results demonstrated that the primary benefit of preclassification is a direct increase in plant throughput capacity. The Grizzly Feeder with a 2-inch cut size efficiently diverts 34.5% of the nominal flow, eliminating the volumetric bottleneck of the circuit. By complementing this relief with an adjustment of the primary(...).
