Abstract

The use of structural control systems to safeguard the integrity of a structure and the safety of its occupants is fundamental in buildings located in high seismic risk zones. Among these control systems are active mass dampers (AMD), which have the particularity of being tunable for a wide range of frequencies and adapting to changing situations in real time. Multiple studies have been carried out to examine the effectiveness of using a single AMD installed on the top floor of various buildings around the world, and, at the same time, the efficiency of using 2 AMDs installed on different floors of different buildings has also been studied. Given this, the following question arises: what is the most effective option to reduce the responses of a structure when it is subjected to multiple vibration frequencies? Is it the use of a "large" AMD positioned on the top floor of the building? Or the use of multiple smaller AMDs, but strategically positioned? This work seeks to answer that question by modeling three real benchmark buildings in MATLAB, along with a tuned mass damper (TMD) and 2 different active mass dampers, a "large" one and two small ones. The response of these three structures is analyzed using the three different structural control mechanisms when subjected to 2 seismic records using the Simulink program. Finally, the results obtained from the simulation are compared to determine which method is the most effective in reducing the responses in the buildings.
