Abstract
Given the growing global water crisis and the resulting expansion of the desalination industry, biofouling in seawater intake pipelines and the environmental impacts of current commercial solutions motivated the development of an HDPE nanocomposite reinforced with carbon nanotubes (CNTs, 2% wt and 6% wt), characterizing its mechanical and surface properties, as well as its antifouling performance in a real marine environment, alongside an experimental design aimed at optimizing its manufacturing process. The results showed material embrittlement caused by poor nanotube dispersion, with stiffness increases of up to 45,1%, along with a surface transition from hydrophilic to superhydrophobic, reflected in lower biomass adhesion compared to pure HDPE, an effect more pronounced at the lower concentration. The experimental design revealed that dispersion parameters had a greater influence on antifouling performance than nanotube concentration itself. It is concluded that the nanocomposite represents a promising alternative for this application, requiring further optimization of the dispersion process and a suitable balance between antifouling performance and mechanical properties.
