Abstract
The growth of air traffic in Chile, coupled with the increase in the proportion of people with disabilities (17% of the population according to (Fernanda et al., n.d.)) and the population aging index (79% according to (INE, 2024)), poses significant challenges in accessibility and inclusion for the Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport (AMB), which during the first months of 2025 has received criticism for its limitations in serving passengers with reduced mobility and the condition of their wheelchairs. This problem prompted the present study, the objective of which is to analyze the current situation of services for People with Reduced Mobility (PRM) at AMB, taking into account factors such as equipment, infrastructure, training, and user perception, and based on that, propose a technological improvement based on international standards and the principle of Universal Design that adapts to the Chilean context. The research was conducted using a descriptive and mixed-method approach, based on a case study focused on AMB Airport, combining interviews with key stakeholders and direct observation, user surveys, and documentary review. It was also complemented by international benchmarking at leading airports such as Tokyo and Miami, recognized by international organizations for their specialized training, inclusive strategies, and the implementation of technologies such as autonomous wheelchairs that leverage AI and IoT, achieving process efficiency.
