Abstract

At the El Teniente mine, the intensive exploitation of mineral resources led to a progressive advance towards greater depths in underground mining operations. This process, coupled with the method of extraction used (mining by subsidence), resulted in a continuous expansion of the subsidence crater over time. The variations observed in the crater were a direct consequence of the expansion of the productive sectors and the rearrangement of the crater walls during mining activity, which had a significant impact on the crater boundary. As a preventive measure against the growth of the subsidence crater, the Superintendence of Geomechanical Studies (SEG) carries out annual georeferenced aerial photogrammetric flights over the crater. These studies define the limits of the crater rim, establishing an entrance restriction zone and the projection of the safety zone. The prohibition zone is currently delimited 50 meters from the crater rim, based on the identification of cracks detected inside and outside the crater through images provided by aerial photogrammetric flights. Unlike the safety zone, which can be estimated using fracture angles. The correct definition of the access restriction or prohibition zone is essential due to the high risk of collapse, this being the most critical region close to the crater. Mining has integrated safety as a priority, as important as productivity in its operations. It is for this reason that an accurate representation of this area is sought to avoid possible fatal accidents and ensure the protection of operators and equipment in the mining environment. In this study, a geostatistical tool co-correlograms, was developed in Python and applied to analyze the relationship between the internal deformations of the crater (OT), due to landslides, and the InSAR deformations observed on surface, which correspond to the appearance of cracks in the surroundings of the crater. The main purpose was to improve the accuracy in the delimitation of the no-entry zone by sectors, in order to reduce the safety risks that could arise due to an inaccurate estimation of these limits. This methodology was intended not only to comply with the technical aspects of the analysis, but also to contribute concretely to operational safety, highlighting the relevance of adequately managing risks in intensive subway mining environments. The results obtained showed a direct and quantitative correlation between OT and InSAR deformations, which confirmed the hypothesis that ground subsidence promotes crack formation. In addition, it was verified that the co-correlogram tool developed in this study is effective to evaluate the spatial and temporal relationship between these deformations, fulfilling the main objective of the research by estimating the prohibition zone. It was observed that the temporal and spatial distance of influence of OT deformations in the generation of cracks (InSAR deformations) varied according to the crater sector. In the Esmeralda sector (east), a high correlation was estimated up to a maximum distance of 75 meters, with a temporal effect of 5 months from the occurrence of an out-of-plunge (OT) deformation to the appearance of a crack in the subsidence crater. In the Reno sector (north), the correlation was high up to a distance of 180 meters, with a temporal effect of 3 months. Finally, from the results obtained, it was possible to identify the optimal spatial and temporal distance at which the highest correlation between the deformations is reached for each sector, which allowed us to accurately estimate the limit zone of influence. This estimation was visualized more effectively through the creation of a color map, which validated the use of the co-correlogram as an appropriate geostatistical tool for this application. Additionally, recommendations for geostatistical analysis were provided, as well as a discussion of the limitations identified in the study.
