Abstract
One of the worldwide problems and specifically in developing countries is the large amount of unbilled water that is wasted. In Chile the percentage of water loss is very high; where, according to data provided by the Superintendence of Sanitary Services (SISS), it was determined that the cumulative loss in 2014 was 33.65%. For Aguas del Altiplano, it is 35.1%, a very high percentage according to the International Water Association’s (IWA) practical guide, which should be the base of every company to deal with high levels of losses. This guide indicates the network status is bad if losses range above a 30%. Given that the water companies in the country and particularly Aguas del Altiplano have a high percentage of losses, implementation of new methods to reduce losses is required. That is why the Portuguese Health Authority AGS, hich has sustainable technology aimed at reducing water losses, proposed a new technology to control and reduce unbilled water, bearing in mind the IWA recommendations. This paper seeks to design, implement and evaluate this new technology in Chile, to address the problem of unbilled water, specifically the physical losses. This technology was implemented as a pilot analysis project by the company Aguas del Altiplano, specifically in the ity of Alto Hospicio(...).
