Abstract

The commune of San Antonio is home to Chile’s largest port and concentrates a significant amount of infrastructure dedicated to freight transportation. This condition has strongly influenced the city’s urban development. In this context, the passenger transportation system presents several deficiencies related to the organization of its routes, the location of the current bus terminal, and the lack of integration between different modes of transport. These issues are further intensified by the ongoing expansion of the port through the Puerto Exterior project. In addition, an urban barrier located in northern Llolleo interrupts the continuity of the urban fabric, separating a large residential area from one of the commune’s main commercial sectors. In response to these challenges, this project proposes the development of an intermodal station through the relocation of the existing bus terminal to northern Llolleo, taking advantage of the existing railway infrastructure while anticipating the future incorporation of passenger rail services. The proposal aims to reorganize the public transportation system, improve urban coverage, and integrate multiple modes of transport within a single infrastructure capable of responding to both current needs and the future growth of San Antonio. The architectural concept is inspired by the llolle, a traditional Mapuche fishing device whose operating principle consists of guiding natural flows toward a point of convergence. This logic is reinterpreted through a series of architectural axes that organize the flows of people, transportation, and public space, allowing the project not only to improve mobility but also to restore the continuity of the urban fabric between historically disconnected sectors. Consequently(...).
