Abstract
This thesis evaluates the effect of injecting an aqueous suspension of metallic copper nanoparticles (nCu) into the intake air duct (downstream of the intercooler) on the performance, emissions, and combustion characteristics of a Mercedes-Benz OM366LA diesel engine. Water was selected as the carrier fluid after confirming greater stability of the nanoparticles compared to diesel. Tests were conducted at 2000 rpm under 60 % and 100 % load conditions using a completely randomized design with three equivalent nCu concentration levels. At full load (water/fuel ratio ≈ 13 %), nCu concentration had statistically significant effects on maximum in-cylinder pressure (Pmax), its crank angle (θPmax), maximum heat release rate (HRRmax), combustion duration (CA10-90), and combustion phasing (CA50). A decreasing trend in brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) was also observed with increasing nanoparticle dosage. At 60 % load (water/fuel ratio ≈ 40 %), no significant effects were detected, likely due to the stronger cooling effect of the higher water flow rate overshadowing the potential catalytic action of the nanoparticles.
