Abstract
The GOLFIELDS mining company conducts its operations in Peru at the Cerro Corona mine. The main facilities of the Cerro Corona unit consist of an open pit, with dump areas for low-grade minerals and overburden. In 2023, this company went to the FOSTER company with the objective of evaluating the processing of its mining waste using the OXIMETAL PROCESS® technique patented by the company, specifically by Dr. Jorge Ipinza. This technique consists of the addition of a reagent called OXIMETAL to irrigation solutions for chlorinated leaching, improving the kinetic response associated with the dissolution reactions of the different metals of economic interest present in a mineral, in addition to allowing the replacement of conventional aeration in heap leaching. In the present work, the experimental procedure was conducted to evaluate the extraction of copper and gold found in marginal minerals in waste dumps sent by the GOLDFIELDS company. Specifically, column leaching of mineral samples from three different areas of the waste dump of the Cerro Corona concentrator (Gordas, Facilities 1 and 2) is studied. The average grades of the species of economic value from the waste dump are approximately 0.28% Cu and 0.50 g/t Au. Due to the low grade of these minerals, it was proposed to pre-crush the mineral with P100 at -2” and pre-treat it with brines, electrolytes, and refineries for 30 days. Then, leaching was conducted in columns with a total of nine columns, three columns with OXIMETAL PROCESS® (one for each zone) and six without OXIMETAL PROCESS®, these three columns plus a duplicate. Having these intermittent irrigation for 30 days. Irrigation in which the resulting solutions were recirculated and a pH of 1.5 was maintained in the incoming solutions. A maximum copper extraction of 34% was achieved for the OXIMETAL PROCESS® columns, while the metal was not able to be extracted in the conventional leaching columns. Validating the improvement of using OXIMETAL PROCESS® in conventional leaching for cupper extraction. However, no gold extraction was observed.
