Abstract
The principal objective of this research is to optimize the energy use in an entertainment and tourism company. This will bring direct economic benefits to the company, improving it image, social and environmental benefits. An initial focus of this study will be electric energy, because this is one of the most important operational costs of the company. The business unit in analysis spent $684.670.767 during 2009, that represented a 65% of the total of energy consumption. However, in the proposal of this study won ́t rule out other investment alternatives that can reduce total energy consumption (not only electric consumption). The equipments that shows more consumption of electric energy are air conditioning, lighting and gaming machines. According to survey data, these items together account for 86%, and thus solutions for them will be analyzed. The alternatives evaluated will be the replacement of lamps, for lighting and gaming machines, incorporating non-conventional renewable energies and free cooling for air conditioning, as well as the adoption of best practices. In general, energy efficiency alternatives evaluated (except replacement lighting gaming machines) have a payback period of 2 years. From year 3 onwards, only reported savings. One conclusion is that the replacement of lighting gaming machines has savings, but not significant, with a return period of the initial investment of 6 years. This is explained by the high investment and low savings achieved because the characteristics of fluorescent tubes versus led alternative. With this in mind, this measure is excluded of the joint assessment. This joint assessment shows savings of $200.000.000 annually, obtaining a significant decrease in the energy bill of the business unit in analysis. Therefore, investing in such measures can mean significant savings for the company, along with improved image, increase their competitiveness and a contribution to the environment.
