Abstract
Chile is currently experiencing a sustained economic growth, which will keep to continue in the future.Such a growth may be associated with the increase in the country’s energy demand. Accordingly, there must exist a planning for the generation and transmission capacity plan to adequately satisfy thefuture demand. In order to cover the future demand, there exist several power generation companies in the south, from the Bío-Bío region to Los Lagos region, which already have contracts to supply the load customers. Also, it is projected that more generators will be installed in that zone for its water and windpotential development. On the other hand, the main load is concentrated at the Metropolitan region, thus it is necessary to transport the energy generated in the south towards the center of the country. This is achieved through the transmission lines that are located at the Alto Jahuel-Charrúa corridor.Although the country had a plan of works to solve the problem, it did not consider the great growthof the generation in the south zone, reason why it is anticipated that these lines will again be near itslimit of capacity. Consequently, it is necessary to analyze the incorporation of new transmission linesfor this corridor. A single point of integration is evaluated by the south, while the other point has threeoptions located in the Metropolitan region. Also, there are two types of technology: alternating current(AC) and direct current (HVDC). This results in several alternatives analyzed to the year 2024.From the static analysis the new transmission capacities were obtained along with the reinforcementsthat must be realized in the rest of the system, in which the greatest increase of transmissioncapacity was the alternatives of 500 kV AC followed by those of HVDC and 765 kV AC. The caseswith the point of integration in Lo Aguirre 500 kV allow a greater transfer than the rest, fulfilling therequirements of the Norma Técnica de Seguridad y Calidad de Servicio (NTSyCS) for the year 2024.From the economic evaluation the values of investment are obtained in all cases. In general, those witha lower investment value are those of HVDC and 500 kV AC, unlike those of 765 kV AC that has asignificantly higher investment value than the other two technologies. Likewise, the cases with pointof integration in Alto Jahuel 500 kV are the ones of smaller investment followed by Lo Aguirre 500kV and Los Almendros 500 kV that have a very similar investment. Finally, the technical-economic analysis recommends the alternative of a HVDC bipolar with integrationin Lo Aguirre 500 kV with an investment value of 1.045 MUS$.
