Abstract
This thesis addresses the study and computational modeling of the energy behavior of an office located in the Mechanical Engineering Department building at Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María (San Joaquín Campus). The main objective is to develop and validate a thermal model to evaluate the implementation of a hybrid HVAC system incorporating Thermal Energy Storage (TES). The methodology included an in situ monitoring campaign of hygrothermal variables during the summer period, allowing the building's dynamic response to be characterized. A multizone model was developed in TRNSYS 17, manually calibrated and subsequently validated through a coefficient of determination (R²) —for the Main Office— of 0.965 for temperature and 0.630 for relative humidity, confirming its suitability for energy simulation. Simulations of the proposed strategy showed that hygrothermal comfort can be guaranteed on a critical high solar load day, shifting 57% of total energy consumption to the night-time off-peak period. Although incorporating storage and auxiliary equipment resulted in a Seasonal Performance Factor (SPF) of 1.56 —lower than direct generation—, the system achieves a greater strategic benefit: shaving peak electrical power demand by more than 60%, flattening the demand curve and easing the load on the electrical grid.
