Abstract
Engine power is defined as the energy that an internal combustion engine is capable of generating within a time interval. Within the heavy vehicle industry in Chile, there is a tendency to use vehicles whose effective power is greater. The present work aims to study the real impact of increased power for heavy duty engines for the long distance transport industry in Chile. First, we examined the evolution of the market for heavy vehicles and the development of emission standards applicable to the same, in order to analyze the changes that such market has experienced and to observe how they affect the present study regarding heavy vehicles, specifically for long-distance transport. Then, all necessary theoretical basis for the analysis were studied: concepts of power and torque, the internal combustion engine and powertrain components, reliability theory and market research. To establish the real impact of engine power increases, quantitative and qualitative variables associated with the products and industry were studied from two approaches: supply and demand. The results show that vehicles with more engine power have a greater positive impact on the customer than vehicles with lesser power from the point of view of supply and demand, since the relative impacts are 55% to 40% and 85% to 5%, respectively.
