Abstract
In the present study, information and data between the years 2005 and 2012 in Chile are used in order to analyze the effects of family income on educational outcomes of children. At first instance, existing literature is consulted with the objective of reviewing what has been found so far in this matter and to find the right approach to this study. This begins so by studying the existence of a relationship between copper and family income, at the same time searching for some difference over this relation by looking the scenario in mining regions and non-mining regions. Later, factors affecting the academic performance of children are sought and analized, to build a model that allows to explain the academic results of these same children. Through simple linear regressions, it is posible to find a model that explains the academic results, which could include both family income and parental education; however, as both factors have a high correlation, it can not be considered as a correct model and it is necessary to use the Method of Instrumental Variables. By using copper as a tool in this method, it is posible to find a model that explains the academic results of the children and, at the same time, already contain as a variable parental education and family income, although the latter explained by the variation of copper´s price.
