Abstract
This study examines the main logistics challenges of the Chilean automotive retail sector and evaluates how Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) can strengthen the operational performance of Américar Chile, a multi-brand company responsible for coordinating the vehicle flow from port arrival to final customer delivery. The analysis is framed within a highly competitive environment characterized by portfolio diversification, fluctuating demand, and increasing expectations for transparency, delivery speed, and sustainability. The sector review identified structural pressures affecting logistics performance, including operational costs, service variability, the participation of multiple third parties, and emerging environmental requirements. The theoretical framework examined ICT tools such as ERP, WMS, TMS, Business Intelligence platforms, automation and data analytics, emphasizing that their value depends on data integration, system interoperability, and proper data governance. Based on these foundations, a comprehensive diagnostic of Américar’s logistics processes was conducted, revealing both operational strengths and significant gaps related to fragmented systems, manual workloads, data inconsistencies, and heterogeneous procedures across facilities. The findings indicate that the core issues within the logistics flow do not stem from a lack of technology, but from the absence of an integrated digital architecture and standardized operational practices. Consequently, the study proposes a strategic roadmap structured around four pillars: implementing a Single Source of Truth (SSOT), establishing a customized Sales & Operations Planning (S&OP) process, adopting Lean practices to reduce rework and unnecessary vehicle movements, and enhancing analytics through early-warning alerts and predictive models. Overall, the study concludes that moving towards a more integrated, proactive, and sustainable logistics model will enable Américar to improve service reliability, reduce operational costs, strengthen data-driven decision-making, and maintain competitiveness in an evolving automotive retail landscape.
