Abstract
The objective of the study is to analyze the contribution of credit unions to financial inclusion, comparing their impact with traditional banking in Chile. It highlights the need to study how these credit unions, through the provision of financial services to segments excluded from the banking system, improve the quality of life of their members and promote economic and social development. In the analysis of this report, both qualitative and quantitative approaches were used, including a literature review to understand the state of credit unions in Chile and Latin America, statistical analysis of financial data and key variables related to financial inclusion, and a case study of Coopeuch, the largest credit union in Chile, which includes the analysis of its products, services, and social impact. Concepts such as access, use, and quality of financial services; financial education; and the importance of these variables for socioeconomic development are included. Financial exclusion and economic well-being concepts were also examined in line with development and social economy theories. The study shows that credit unions, particularly Coopeuch, have been essential in facilitating access to inclusive financial products such as consumer loans and savings accounts, allowing marginalized sectors to access financial opportunities. The Credit unions offer broader access to financial services in underserved regions, with better coverage compared to traditional banks. They also play an important role in the financial education of their members. As of December 2023, Coopeuch reached 1,160,858 members, consolidating itself as a key player in promoting financial inclusion in Chile. Although cooperatives have made significant progress, they face challenges such as the need to improve their regulation and compete with traditional banking. This study concludes that credit unions are essential for the development of financial inclusion in Chile, significantly contributing to the country's social and economic well-being.
