Abstract
This document comprehend the modeling, validation and protections study of the electricpower system (SEP) at Los Colorados mine, owned by Compañía de Acero del Pacífico(CAP). The Electrical Transient Analyzer Program software (ETAP) was used for modelingprocess and unilinear diagram provided by mine’s Power Department served as areference. It should be noted that the final review of the diagram dates from 2010, and afterthis date, important events such as engines re-empowerment and modification on networktopology occurred. This is the reason why this diagram was upgraded by means of fieldvisits carried out at mines electrical facilities. The modeling process was performed to coverthe maximum demand setting, and it was validated by obtaining the power flow, where itsvoltage and current results (from most important buses) were compared with real measurements.Transformers loading analysis, voltage profile, short circuit currents calculation andover-current protections adjustments studies were also conducted. Promising results wereobtained from transformers loading analysis, since there is only one transformer havinga charge superior to the 90% of nominal capacity, and such transformer does not representa major relevance regarding future expansions. From voltage profile, all buses in theSEP should be within 7% range, according to the Chilean technical safety standard andquality service (NTSyCS). The short circuit current calculation resulted in maximum andminimum short circuit currents for all SEP buses. This information was useful to studyshort circuit probabilities on switches, concluding that neither are at risk to be overcomeby short circuit currents. Over-current protection study enabled existing adjustments tobe updated, protecting equipment, and ensuring coordination at all times. Finally, futureexpansion projected for 2017 was considered, which consists into a conveyor belt that hastwo 200 [HP] engines. From results obtained, it follows that no modifications to existingfacilities should be performed.
