Abstract
This thesis formulates a sourcing and contracting strategy proposal for the supply category of overhead and gantry crane components at Codelco, through the application of the first three phases of the corporate Category Management methodology: current situation analysis, technical and market analysis, and strategy definition. The category presents dispersed information, technical heterogeneity of materials, and dependence on original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), conditions that hinder its management and expose operational continuity to risk. Material, purchasing, contract, equipment, and supplier records were integrated to build a master pool of 2,146 SKUs, of which 2,009 were classified into nine functional families and 137 remained pending classification. The baseline for the 2021–2025 period recorded a cumulative spend of USD 22.38 million; 69.29 % was executed through spot purchases and 71 % was associated with a single observed source. The technical analysis identified 907 overhead cranes and related equipment classified as essential and, according to Codelco’s FMECA matrix, 18 of the 27 evaluated components are critical or very critical. The market analysis identified 41 brands, 18 manufacturers, and 278 SKUs with purchases from more than one supplier, suggesting that part of the observed concentration could be reduced through homologation and selective competitive bidding. The families were segmented using the Kraljic matrix, utilizing their share of spend and supply concentration measured by the Herfindahl–Hirschman Index (HHI). Based on this segmentation, four sourcing scenarios were built and compared through a multi-criteria evaluation. The quadrant-differentiated model (E3) achieved the highest score, with 4.00 out of 5, and retained first place in the weights’ sensitivity analysis. Its potential price savings were estimated between (...).
