Abstract
The flight school Aerosantamaria began at 2011 due to the necessity of training the students of the Commercial Pilot’s career of Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María. It has five aircrafts and performs around 4.000 flight hours a year which makes it one of the most important flight schools of Chile. Aerosantamaria’s fleet is made up of Cessna 172 SP, which is a widely used model and has been in the market for more than 60 years, more Cessna 172’s have been built than any other aircraft. Yet, technology has allowed the development of new airplane designs, lighter and more versatile, that allow the reduction of the operating costs. Thus, Light Sport Aircrafts (LSA) have gained ground within the market as an alternative of the traditional aircrafts. In this work, a replacement of Aerosantamaria’s fleet is carried out with the purpose of achieve saves in the operating costs of the flight school. For that, a project assessment methodology is used, which is divided in six chief steps, namely, review of the income statements of the company, search and evaluation of replacement’s alternatives, technical and legal aspects research, cost projection and net profit, cash flow development and economic evaluation, risk and sensitivity analysis. Thus, convenience and feasibility of using LSA for flight instruction is verified.
