Abstract

This study estimates electric vehicles impacts in Chile and its effect in discarded lithium-ion batteries when they reach the end of their lives. Following this logic, it aims to determine the feasibility of building a lithium-ion battery hydrometallurgy recycling plant and assess its economic and environmental impacts. Multiple modeling approaches were used to simulate battery life cycle, which includes forecasts for electric vehicle sales, battery end-of-life and battery mass estimation. Recycling and battery production modeling software have also been used in combination with Monte Carlo's simulations of material prices to provide a comprehensive analysis. Economic indicators confirm project feasibility with low risk and cost savings for battery production with the use of recovered materials. This study offers valuable insights to battery manufacturers, recycling companies, and government entities concerning investment requirements and expected outcomes.
