Abstract
Wind energy has seen remarkable development in the last decades due to the continually increasing energy demands from modern societies and its promise of being a clean, cheap and ecologically friendly energy source. Savonius type Vertical Axis Wind Turbine is perhaps the simplest design of wind turbine and has several advantages that make it ideal for generating energy in certain scenarios, at the expense of being the less efficient design at extracting energy. The general objective of this study is to identify and test possible improvements in the classic Savonius design aiming on improving its efficiency at extracting energy without hindering its advantages over other wind turbine types. Two possible improvements where identified and tested with the use of a wind tunnel: an alternative blade configuration on the traditional 3-blade Savonius wind turbine, which resulted in an average increase of 15% in the power coefficient, and the use of a wind shield before the returning blade, which resulted in a 50% increase of the power coefficient. Both proposed improvements where tested individually and in combination to study their interaction. Achieving a 50% increase in the power coefficient without any kind of optimisation hints that it could be possible to further improve the design of the Savonius type wind turbine and make it a competitive alternative for energy generation.
