Abstract
Currently we have a great coverage of the different university programs in Chile, so we have a big number of different institutions teaching these programs. That is why there is a quest looking for sustainability that allows these universities to keep in competition. This study/research focused on the identification of the variables that have influence in the operational result of the 25 Universities that belong to the Rector’s Council. With this variable we can find a quantitative model that allows explaining the sustainability. Different samples of 125 observations during 5 years (from 2008 to 2012) had been used in this research. Nine possible variables were analyzed in the first place and only three gave substantial information when realizing different tests and econometric assumptions: The number of full time teachers, built-up square meters and Operating Income. Therefore, to handle the operational results that allow supporting the institution, it is necessary to have policies that manage significant variables not neglecting the rest of the variables that are implied (number of students, number of university programs, state contribution, dropouts and operating costs).
