Abstract
In Chile the mining industry is one of the most important sources of revenue; but like other industries dedicated to the exploitation of limited natural resources, it faces the challenges of sustainability not only from and economic and social point of view; but also from an environmental one. The purpose of the present study was to support the national mining and technological industries by identifying the differences between Chile and Finland; countries of similar human resources but quite different otherwise. The Finnish mining industry is considered an example of technological sustainability; Chile on the other hand has an enormous wealth of geological resources and reservoirs but needs to incorporate innovative technologies in order to establish a sustainable mining industry. During our work we performed a general investigative study of the mining industry in Chile and Finland, we analyzed the results, selected different criteria of comparison and then, by cross reference of information validated by various mining experts, we identified the main differences and technology gaps between both countries. As a result of our findings we propose a roadmap to achieve leadership in sustainable medium-scale mining in Chile. This roadmap includes the incorporation of innovative technologies and information technology in order to breach the sustainability gap currently present between the mining industries of both countries. The implementation of such measures may result in the development of a more sustainable, environmentally friendlier mining industry in Chile.
