Abstract
The link between dividend policy and institutional ownership has been a rather neglected, although it is true there is plenty of literature for each item separately especially in Anglo-Saxon literature. So far no one knows of a similar study in Chile, which relates the existence of a positive link between dividend policy and institutional ownership. This work is an example of the use of models that have been established to examine the possible association between ownership structure and dividend policy in the world and apply them to the Chilean reality. This study comes from an analysis in the United Kingdom, where institutional and ownership structures are different from those of other countries like the United States, and that is the conceptual framework in which this work is based. In developing this analysis will use a panel data set of Chilean companies currently listed on the Stock Exchange, obtained from the database Economatica, the role of institutional ownership in partnership with the dividend rate is analyzed in the context of the Lintner dividend model [American Economic Review, 46 (1956) 97], Waud [Journal of the American Statistical Association, 1996] and Fama and Babiak [Journal of the American Statistical Association, 63 (1968) 1132]. The results have occurred in other countries like the UK, a strong support for the hypothesis that there is a positive association between payment of the dividend policy and institutional ownership, which must demonstrate to Chile. Moreover, the results of an earnings trend model suggest a positive earnings trend component of the association between institutional ownership and dividend payout rate. In addition, there is some evidence to support the hypothesis that there is a negative association between dividend payout policy and ownership of the directory.
