Abstract
The project was carried out in the mine site El Soldado, which belongs to the multinational corporation AngloAmerican and is located in Nogales, V Region of Valparaíso. The scope of the project will be the mining trucks Komatsu 830, fleets AC and DC. The objective of this project is to reduce the amount of time employed in filling fuel tanks and increase the number of filters that are filled each time a fuel load is completed. In this way the use of the equipment augments and therefore the amount of rocks moved to the stockpile also increases. In order to achieve the main objective, the “Procedimiento de Conducción” de Camiones was changed. With the purpose of reducing the time employed in filling the fuel tank from 27 minutes to 8 minutes, two measures were introduced: the 10 minutes that the operator had to be on the truck before starting loading the fuel was eliminated, and an external operator in charge of filling the tanks was assigned. In addition, the number of fuel liters used to fill the tank increased from 3180 liters (70% of the tank capacity) to 4089 liters (90% of the tank capacity). Another new measure was changing the fuel tank filling system to the Wiggings system, which enlarges the fuel’s flow from 189 liters/min to 1135 liters/min. Finally, a system to control and report fuel was created, such that the number of liters loaded into truck’s tanks and the time required to fill these tanks can be controlled, while matching the fuel data from the Dispatch Open Pit and the Fuel Management System (FMS). The total investment on this project was US$323.290. The obtained results show that the average time dedicated to fill a tank was 8.65 minutes for an average load of 3690 liters, giving a 94% match between the data from Dispatch and FMS. Moreover, the use of the equipment raised from 79.5% to 80.25 %. This generated an increment in the revenues of US$483.599 in two months. From this, the estimated yearly increment in the revenues is approximately US$ 2.9 millions. In conclusion, the goal for the projects was not achieved, but a significant reduction of the values of interest was accomplished. It follows that by introducing small changes in the procedures and equipment, one can attain more benefits than before. In this stage of copper extraction, it is crucial to constantly check the procedures and control the registered times since the amount of obtained fine copper tonnes depends on them, and so does the gross profit of the business.
