Abstract
Wind resource assessment is the process by which wind power developers estimate the future energy production of a wind farm. Accurate wind resource assessments are crucial to the successful development of wind farms. In this context, wind resource assessment is usually carried on by using instrumented meteorological towers equipped with different sensors of environmental variables. Under complex topography or remote sites, prospecting may be unfeasible due to high costs and/or technical complexity in the assembly of the towers. Another alternative is the use of unconventional methods such as SODAR or LIDAR radars, which have a high commercial value mainly because they were designed for other purposes. This work presents the theoretical and experimental development of an unconventional methodology for wind assessment using a tethersonde. This methodology allows easy assembly and an easy change of the measured height, recording speed and wind direction in complex terrain sites at a low cost. This makes it possible to evaluate the wind resource of a place where traditional methods have technically complex and / or high costs of implementation.
