Abstract

The design of the accelerated loading system is based on pavement testing equipment. A pneumatic wheel is connected to an articulated frame which, by means of an electromechanical actuator, is capable of simulating the desired load and retracting the wheel from the surface; a subsystem made of a metallic structure provides support and guidance to the carriage. This degree thesis documents the mechanical design of a mobile loading system intended for accelerated testing on pavement and bridge specimens, within the framework of the FONDEF IDEA ID25110357: CWIM (Continuous Weight in Motion) project. The main objective consisted of developing laboratory equipment capable of simulating, in a repeatable and controlled manner, the passage of a heavy vehicle over surfaces instrumented with fiber optic sensors, ensuring the manufacturability and maintainability of the system. To carry out the design, the VDI 2221 systematic methodology was adopted, structuring the project into the phases of conceptual, basic, and detailed engineering, along with the development of a cost-estimated manufacturing plan. From the perspective of dynamic and structural requirements, the system was dimensioned considering a 500 kg mass for the carriage—a critical variable for estimating inertial forces and selecting the drivetrain—while the vertical loading subsystem was designed to apply and withstand a maximum test load of 2 [Ton-f] (approximately 19.6 [kN]) directly onto the pavement at a maximum speed of 5 [m/s]. Both load and speed are adjustable. The development of detailed engineering included three-dimensional modeling and the calculation of critical components subjected to fluctuating loads, such as the shaft and the hub, which are components to be manufactured in the university’s metal-mechanic workshop. Through the use of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and the application of the stress-life method, the structural integrity of the wheel assembly was validated, guaranteeing a suitable factor of safety for infinite fatigue life. Additionally, standardized components were integrated under the principles of Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA). As a result, the machine’s design is presented, driven by a 30 [kW] gearmotor controlled by a variable frequency drive, which actuates the system’s drivetrain via a drum, pulley, and cable connected to a mobile carriage. This carriage simulates the weight of a vehicle on a medium-duty truck tire using an electromechanical actuator on the carriage frame. All these components are contained(...).
