Abstract
The demand for data storage has forced IT bussiness, in recent years, to increase the availability and lower the prices of data storage. Considering these requirements makes necessary to adapt the storage platform to meet the clients expectations. This work aimed to implement reliable storage systems, with a good value for quantity and whose tools would make the administration tasks of the storage infrastructure simpler. In general, in this work several storage technologies are studied, of which Ceph is chosen as an alternative because of its high availability and scalability features. Later, the design of the solution for virtual block devices provision for a “Proxmox Virtual Environment” (PVE) is elaborated, in addition designing the tools for monitoring and alarm. Finally, the start up of the system is addressed, on which the operational limit of the system is measured -based on the write operations it support, and also exposing the results of its performance in a production environment. The designed solution satisfy the requirements of high availability and performance for the virtualization platform. Also, the storage overhead was decreased from 300% to 200%; some administrative costs where attenuated by centralizing the storage system administration; some data loss risks, caused by split-brain in “Distributed Replicated Block Device” (DRBD), where mitigated; the monitoring platform was improved by the need to provide better hardware performance data, which was used to make decitions over the system design and future work.
