Abstract
The present thesis will develop a business model for selling dried fruits, nuts, seeds and other healthy snacks at a local level (‘mom & pop’ store). Brand di_erentiation will be a key element for the present project, as well as the trends that society is experimenting towards eating habits, specifically what is and isn’t healthy. Rancagua, the city in which the store will be located, is just catching up on this trend, which allows for a business opportunity in a previously unchartered market. First, a study of the possible business’ models were made. After that, the canvas mode, coined by Alexander Osterwalter, was chosen. This model focuses on: added value, market segmentation, channels, customer relations, key resources, income sources, key activities and cost structure. The entirety of these elements can create value for the company, its clients and also society as a whole. After choosing the model, the following step was researching the key elements for its developing, and the tools that would work best towards its success. These ended up being those proposed by Alexander Osterwalter: stakeholder analysis and the canvasing model. However, some modifications were made for the stakeholder analysis, mainly because other tools can deliver the same function but also give more information about the industry both at a macro and micro scale. Due to this, PEST analysis and Porter’s five forces will also be used for developing the brand. After deciding the model that will increases the chances of success, it was necessary to define the industry and market in which the business will function, in order to optimize resources and better apply the tools previously chosen. The products and services o_ered will be a combination of dried fruits, seeds, nuts and other healthy snacks, in di_erent formats. These formats include: a ‘healthy jar’, containing a pre-mixed selection of products in a glass jar, along with directions for preparing a healthy meal with them; snacks for the busy person on the go, such as granola bars and healthy cookies; and environmentally friendly packages of house mixes (variety of flavours in one, such as almonds, nuts and dried cranberries with seasoning) with unique names. The physical store will be located at Portal Rancagua (President Eduardo Frei Montalva Hg 750). Of all the malls in the city, this one was selected because the nearby houses have the highest property value per sq. metre, suggesting its inhabitants will be more inclined to purchase a product with an added value, instead of those buyers who are more focused on the price alone. In order to have better knowledge of the local market, two surveys were made. The first one was a preliminary study, just to determine some of the criteria necessary to elaborate the business model. In that opportunity, 100 people were asked to answer via web survey some questions about the products that will be sold at the store. After that, a statistically significant face to face survey was made, with the goal of knowing if the value proposal described above would actually be well received by the target audience. The economic impact is projected to five years, with a yearly 10% increase. The total costs are 55% of the profits and the average purchase is expected to be UF 0,155 per client. An initial investment of UF 441 is required, and it will be returned within the first year of business. The mentioned cost is low due to the fact that the physical space will be rented, not bought, and it only required minimal maintenance and furnishing cost, and thus fewer man hours of work. Finally, the NPV of this business is UF 4.740 and a IRR of 356 %.
