Abstract
This work encompasses the hydrodynamic design of hydrofoils for a reference planing hull, characteristic of a recreational motorboat. The hydrofoil design is empirically validated using a scaled model of the vessel, composed of the hull and the mounted hydrofoils, which is propelled by a specially designed and fabricated towing device. The objective of the hydrofoil design, is to enable the scaled model to perform stable takeoff, flight, and descent along a straight trajectory and over calm water, what is achieved in the last tests performed by using a mechatronic control system for flight stability. The final design of the hydrofoils may serve as a foundation for the design of a prototype which utilizes a hull with similar characteristics, while the testing method with the towing device shows potential to be used with educational purpose.
