Abstract
The stilt houses (¨palafitos¨) located in Chiloé are traditional vernacular dwe- llings that began to be built in the 19th century. They are socially validated as dynamic living heritage, representative of the way of the ¨chilote¨ life. Cu- rrently, there are new questions about its permanence and conservation, spe- cifically the traditional residential use. However, the study of its thermal per- formance is an unexplored topic that can directly affect the conservation of this residential typology through sustainable rehabilitation. The application of a mixed methodology based on a historical bibliographic compilation, and the use of digital tools of dynamic thermal simulation, allows to understand this type of housing from the evaluation of its energy performance, bringing to light the annual energy losses and the current annual heating demand in 10 study cases. Such results allow to anticipate intervention scenarios and decision-making on these housing considering the virtual scenario and the feasibility to perform such interventions, without damaging or modifying the heritage values that represent this heritage typology of the Chiloé area, and always seeking the integration of the inhabitants to all forms of rehabilitation of their stilt houses.
