Abstract
This thesis, titled "Comparative Analysis and Strategy Proposal for the Integration of Circular Economy and Sustainability in the Institutional Management of Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María", addresses the growing challenge of integrating sustainability and circular economy into higher education institutions. The research focuses on a comparative analysis between Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María (UTFSM) and other pioneering universities in sustainability, aiming to identify gaps and propose effective strategies to strengthen UTFSM's commitment to sustainability. The study is structured around key dimensions: environmental, academic and curricular, social, and innovation. The environmental dimension focuses on the main challenges UTFSM faces in resource management and carbon footprint reduction, emphasizing the need to optimize contracted services and improve energy efficiency through regulatory agreements and proper waste management. The academic and curricular dimension examines how sustainability has been slowly incorporated into the curriculum, identifying the lack of an explicit structure and the need for a more coordinated and transversal approach. The social dimension explores UTFSM's role in the local community, highlighting opportunities for greater engagement through projects that promote sustainable practices, such as waste management and the use of renewable energies. Finally, the innovation dimension highlights the university's current projects in areas such as geothermal energy, green hydrogen, and technology transfer, emphasizing the importance of connecting these initiatives with industry and communities. Throughout the thesis, a set of strategies is proposed based on best practices observed and adapted to UTFSM's context. These include the implementation of practical sustainability education programs, improving campus environmental management, and promoting interdisciplinary projects that address complex problems with a holistic approach. The recommendations are complemented by an analysis of gaps and opportunities, providing a clear roadmap to advance toward a more sustainable university management model aligned with global trends.
