Abstract
The effect of the addition of aluminum, how is added to the oxide slag of the Codelco's Ventanas division was studied. This study was executed, because the need of the operation to increase the amount of blister copper obtained by the conversion process.Data were obtained using a Peirce Smith converter specially adapted for the experiments, by sealing its nozzles with refractory, to prevent leakage from the melt slag. In this process the aluminum is added in the form of grit to the converter mouth through the duct used for suction of the gas reaction, where aluminum is thrown out in the same bags are purchased. The measured variables obtained are tons of blister copper and the amount of slag discharged after the process, all normalized to the amount of slag introduced to the process. These parameters provide insight into the behavior of treatment versus varying amounts and forms of addition of the aluminum used, settling times and chemical compositions of slag. The results showed that for copper from the slag must have a reducing agent, in this case aluminum, while no addition of aluminum does not allow obtaining some copper. Another finding showed that the settling time is not an important factor for slag treatment. Finally, another important conclusion is that the addition of aluminum to the conversion process and the procedure used herein helps decrease the amount of slag would end by going into Teniente Converter or pit, as appropriate.
