Abstract
The needs of customers are always a subject of concern amongst institutions in every industry. The situation in the importing industry is not so different. The constant battle to lead the market makes companies deploy all of their efforts towards strengthening their processes, practices, and procedures in order to become more efficient whether it is in their airport, customs, commerce, or costumer service operations. In this context, the following study is conducted by applying some management tools such as Benchmarking and Failure Mode & Effect Analysis. These tools allow us to compare importing services provided by DHL Express against its direct competitors FedEx Express, TNT, and UPS. Through this analysis, we hope to identify DHL’s strengths and weaknesses and at the same time obtain industry practices that are considered effective which could be implemented with the ultimate goal to remain leader in the industry. The aspects to be discussed in this study are the following: first, we measure factors of competitiveness. For instance, management of claims, warehousing costs, offered services, and timeline of products in transit, among others. Second, we compare the differences in the mapping of DHL’s importing processes against the direct competitors. Later, we conduct a failure mode & effect analysis in which the same process is divided into three different parts in order to identify critical steps. Lastly, a customer survey of DHL and its competitors is conducted to determine the level of satisfaction perceived as regards to the services rendered. The results, in general, indicate that DHL is the courier with the most positive aspects in the industry which has gained it its leader status in the market. However, there are certain procedures and processes that can be improved and others that should be emulated from competitors. FedEx and TNT are the two easiest companies to imitate. This is due to the fact that they posses several interesting strategies for study and possible implementation. The proposals for improvement brought forth in this study have been well accepted and only one of them was rejected because it was out of reach. The level of approval is high and some of these proposals can be implemented. For as long as DHL continues to maintain good practices, and the proposals for improvement are implemented correctly, DHL will remain fortifying its position as leader in the local imports industry.
