Abstract

La Serena is the regional capital of the Coquimbo Region and the second oldest founded city in Chile. It is recognized for its Neocolonial Architectural Style and its historic houses, which characterize its urban and social past. Its heritage includes elements dating from the colonial period to modernity, reflecting the evolution of a community that has managed to preserve its cultural identity over time. However, in recent years, there has been a growing deterioration of heritage properties and subsequent abandonment by the local municipality due to a lack of resources to restore certain properties that are fundamental to the cultural identity of the city. Therefore, this project proposes the rehabilitation of the former “Casa Piñera,” located in the Historic Center of the city, addressing the issue of bullying in response to the systematic increase in bullying cases in the city, particularly within educational establishments. In this way, the project approaches the site through its restoration, revitalization, and enhancement, proposing a Community Center for Protection and Resilience. The aim is to rehabilitate the property, provide it with a new cultural value, and contribute to the need for new cultural, safe, inclusive, and resilient spaces for the community of La Serena. The main objective of the project is to establish a balanced dialogue between the heritage value of the property and a new architectural intervention focused on preventing bullying, differentiating the new intervention from the existing structure while respecting the identity of the complex. The architectural project incorporates spaces for support, gathering, and activities, articulated through transitional spaces that promote protection, orientation, and accessibility for users. The project seeks (...).
