Abstract
Due to the sustained increase of the installed capacity of Variable Renewable Energies (VRE), power systems are facing an operational kind of problem because there is not enough flexibility to cope with the variability introduced by VRE, so power systems cannot ensure a safe and reliable operation. First of all, in this pre-grade thesis a study is made on the effects of introducing large amounts of VRE in a power system and alongside how ancillary and Energy Storage Systems deal with variability. Later, the different current energy storage technologies and their applications are studied to find out that the most suitable technology to incorporate an Energy Storage System for the Chilean case are Pumped Hydroelectric Storage (PHS) facilities. More profound studies are necessary to be made in terms of economic and technical performance of PHS facilities, but there are some variables like their profitability and typical cost that made of this type of facilities a good contender.
