Abstract

The airline industry is characterized by volatility and sensitivity, any change or event that take place in the world affect in one way or another. 2008 will be one of the most remembered by the aviation industry, this because of the prices reached historic oil surpassing $ 140 per barrel. This situation led to bankruptcy and forced the various companies and airlines in the world to improve efficiency in cost and finding strategies that allow them to stay in business. Considering the current scenario that threatens a deep recession in the global industry, the call to reduce costs has become even stronger The highest cost of any airline is the fuel. This cost is unmanageable by companies, because it is set globally and is essential for the operation of aircraft, however, costs related to other areas of an airline if they are manageable and should be studied carefully to achieve greater efficiency. Despite the global context of the latter two years, the Chilean airline market has achieved unparalleled figure in the movement of cargo and passengers. National airlines transported more than 4,765,000 passengers during the past year, of which SKY Airline transported to 16.9%. Despite this high figure, the airline suffered a lot, and not all were able to pass these tests successfully demonstrated in October last Aircomet out of the market, the product of unsustainable fuel prices. Faced with this situation, the only market left as survivors LAN and SKY, but at the end of 2008 joined a new competitor: Principal which aims to cover the market of Sky, thinking that the product they offer is similar, and service aircraft. The competition will be tough over the next few years, so companies must be highly efficient in all their efforts to reduce costs and increase margins as far as possible, only in this way may endure over time and grow into new and better future prospects. The present work is focused on SKY Airline and specifically in the management of maintenance, its purpose is to deliver security to the daily operation and productivity of the fleet, while minimizing the possibility that an aircraft is on ground (AOG) as a result of the lack of a rotable unit that has been required as a replacement product fails. This research is directly linked with the continuous supply of rotable units and company costs, as the loss of a transaction resulting in thousands of dollars for the company. For this, you must add the high cost for a replacement who is not in stock (Exchange), which have been increasing year by year after the increase in the fleet. This expansion of the fleet has meant an increased demand for parts that are not available in the store, so it is conducting a study prevailed, those who are more critical so as to be purchased to avoid obvious AOG `s. The study was executed in an extremely cautious looking for only those units actually needed, that, due to fleet renewal that the company will suffer in the medium term. The costs associated with the purchase of these units is the sum of $212,650, a figure that may well be repaid by the sale of many units into disuse by the existing fleet. This purchase increases the levels of store service, which rose from 8% to 80% only with the proposed acquisitions. The purchase of the units can not achieve the goal completely. It becomes absolutely necessary from the acquisition of these units, improving the processes involved during all phases of a rotable unit. For this, it is essential to deliver evidence of the operation of aircraft maintenance system that supports the company, and to know the responsibilities of the various areas involved in their cargo. To finish establishing a distribution warehouse that houses these units, seeking to improve the control of the same, methods of installing visual alert indicating the breakdown of a unit and developing strategies to reduce the times of shortage and improve the times of the suppliers units return to base, this increased level of service to store values close to 90% These improvements mean an investment of approximately $ 713, which is tiny in comparison with the large sums that may be paid from the product supply.
