Abstract

The remote sensing through a wide range of applications that can be developed from observations has several advantages comparing it to other more conventional observation ways like aerial photogrammetry and field works. The main benefits of remote sensing are: (A) Global and periodic coverage of the surface of the earth: due to orbitals characteristics of the satellites, it’s possible to obtain repetitive imagery of most part of the earth, even from areas that are inaccessible for other means. (B) Information of regions not visible within the spectrum: the electric-optic sensors give images from areas that are inaccessible for human eye or the conventional photography, like medium and thermic infrared or the microwaves. (C) Digital formatting: the digital treatment of the imagery makes the interpretation process more agile, allows it to generate quantitative models and integrate results with other type of geographic information. (D) Updating and quickness: it solves problems linked with the input and updating data for the implementation of Geographic Information System (GIS), for the capacity of obtaining thematic documents, at low cost and in a short period of time very near to obtaining the used imagery, offering more temporal accessibility instead of other conventional technics. Overall, it’s possible to enumerate a wide amount of uses and applications of remote sensing, which development will bring the benefits previously stated. And so, the development of this technology allows those countries in constant growing to achieve social benefits, strategic, investigation and innovation, process optimization and others. Considering what’s previously stated and the needs of Chile to be a part of the global satellite system, to innovate in technology for the space program, to contribute to the national scientific development, and obtain, process and analyze imagery, as an input to the sustainable productive development of the country it arises the project for a Terrestrial Observation Satellite System – SSOT. In this degree project it is presented an exploratory and descriptive investigation of new Chilean satellite program, the Terrestrial Observation Satellite System - SSOT. Through the description of technic characteristics y the requirements for the applications, it is possible to establish the sectors of application in which will have better results and more advantage of its capacities. However, the main restriction is from the availability of imagery, due that the project, as today, is not operational. For this reason it was decided to make a comparison with similar technical sensors. The sensors chosen are: FormoSat-2, KompSat-2, DubaiSat-1, and Spot-5. Finally the applications for which the SSOT possesses the necessary characteristics for accomplishing the requirements are defined. Two of them are selected for developing through the use of imagery processing software called IDRISI. This way we intend to have an approach of what we could obtain in real terms from the images from the SSOT when operational. The imagery selected responds to two decision factors: 1) Images from systems with ability levels that are similar to those obtained by SSOT. 2) Availability of imagery by the Chilean Space Agency.
